Russian Roulette with your vendors…Some times price is not always what to look for.

Hey guys, I know this may sound strange, to you but here’s a 411 about your vendors and prices. I’ve said several times about pricing out vendors. There is a certain cost in making a business successful. It’s about being fair, but being fair to the business to make profits otherwise you are going to find yourself sitting a month or even a week before the wedding trying to replace vendors you may have lost.

I was contacted this morning, and Monday for a problem with a vendor. I spoke with this client October 2009. She initially came to me about hiring for her wedding as the photographer. I couldn’t reach her after my quote to her, thinking she wasn’t happy with the price. My prices are fair for what I provide, Free engagement, Full copyrights, and I shoot with full frame cameras which cost me (4,000.00 each). I probably should be charging 5000.00 for services, but I don’t. They start at 950.00. The bottom of pricing compared to my competition. One thing that I had to balance was making a living, growth of my business and as well customer satisfaction and continued added features so your day can be eventful and as well memorable. However, after an exhaustive attempt to contact her back, emails, phone, messages etc. I decided that she found another photographer. That ultimately came true on this phone call from her today. Sadly, but efficiently I save EVERYONES number in my phone for the added benefit so I can prep myself when someone calls, and I can address their questions easily with familiarizing myself with who it is from the caller ID. It’s been a very successful tactic that I do.

So the client asked if I was available for her date, I opened my calendar and went to her date, which was changed from the current. Thankfully I have it available. She went with another photography company as I mentioned I thought she did. That company is local, and charges around 500.00 for an ALL day event, no limit of time, copyright, and an album. Now lets say granted the album cost 40.00, prints cost 25.00 to put in the album. Subtract the 65.00 off of the 500.00 and you are left with 435.00. YES, I know 435.00 is a LOT of money to be making in one day. But think about it. It’s not one day of work. Color correcting, editing photos, burning them to disc, and then shipping or delivery.

I have put in a 1.5hr per 1hr ratio of shooting. This means, for ever hour of shooting, I have 1.5hours of processing time afterwards. So based on 10 hours, I will have 25 hours of work invested in your wedding on my side. 17.50 an hour is what that turns out to be. Ok that is STILL good money I understand. However, have you thought of the business yet? Remember ALL day long means all day. I was basing it on 10 hours. So the client is actually paying for 25hours of work based on 10 hours, and also a getting products that should have a markup on them for replacement and errors that may occur at a later date with reprints, and simply profits. It does take electricity, computers, and maintenance, licensing, storage, and lastly personal time to run a business. The invested cost to you that you are paying, an investment is to create lifelong memories of a one time event.

If you are coming into the selection of your vendors as “money first” then you are definitely going to be spinning the roulette wheel of “will they be there when your wedding comes here” as this client has opened up to me as being true. Look at the totality of the providing factors. What do they offer, How long do they do it, are they doing it fair for them self, does it seem like TOO good of a deal. Think of when you went to the mechanic. They charge 150-200/hr for maintenance. If they were doing everything at cost, how long would they be there, how quality would their work be knowing they are doing it at the minimum bid. So this in point is a GREAT reason why most business fail, their profit to fairness is so far off and they are just ‘trying to get any work they can’ Quality suffers, and eventually they can not afford to replace their equipment because they don’t budget, and simply can’t put any money away for repairs, replacement, and upgrades.

Simply, this sounds VERY good to you up front, what do you care what they do for the next client, as long as it works for me, and they want to give me a good deal, I’m down for it. But as this client found out, this company is not returning calls, not answering emails, their website is down. Because I am familiar with the company, I decided to call my self. The phone is disconnected, and the website is down. I did a little more research and found the web company hosting. I asked if their site is down on the server, or if its a manual removal since I can’t get a hold of them. She asked me if I was the owner, and said no just a vendor trying to reach them. Her response was, yes we’re trying to get a hold of them too to get their website online. (I imagine that they can’t or didn’t pay the bills) Economy slow or not, this is what we prepare for in the good times, to float the bad times.

But when selecting vendors, and the prices are soo good you jump all over it. Ask yourself will this company be here when I have my date come around. Chances are very slim if everyone else in the industry is doing it double, or 3x their cost. This is a very touch subject to me since, I started out doing weddings with no experience at 400.00 and moved up because of cost and continued client requests, popularity, and losses from damage or replacement photos that got damaged in transit. My cameras have to be replaced every two years with the amount of work I do.

That is My responsibility not the client, but it has to be incorporated into your cost, otherwise the ship will eventually turn upside down when you have to try to pay yourself a salary, and then the 4,000.00 cost of a new camera comes out of the business owners pocket rather than the business, there’s no justification on being able to make that back since the profits from the weddings based on 52 weddings a year, and a profit margin of around 40.00 max per wedding x 52 weeks a year that leaves you with $2000.00 a year in sheer profits IF you worked every Saturday. Subtract that 40.00 from the wedding above @ 10hr, and now the photographer is making 15.00/hr, – the tax, of 20 percent 12.00/hr to run his business, and provide you a quality job. Its an inevitable cycle of about 3-5 years and they are in the hole and no longer in business. So think about cost when you are selecting, no just for your pocket, but is he making enough to survive when my wedding comes out?

Good Prices, mean good deal, but good business? good quality? good chance they will be in business? Decide for yourself…

Thanks for reading!

Rachel | Devin’s next up on the list:)

October is a busy month, but definitely a special one for everyone. Rachel, Devin, and mom and dad came today to meet with me. I was out for a quick bike ride and missed a call from them. We had the meeting set for 6:30, but since we were able to get together before hand we decided to do it earlier. Their wedding will be at Wilbur Boat house in Wilbur by the sea. Rachel say’s the wedding will be a simple basic wedding, but that means elegant and beautiful! I can’t wait for the engagement photos. I will be doing some unique e-pics for them which will be fun. Rachel’s mom was giving some tips for decorating, since we’re still remodeling a bit.

:) E-pics to come sooN!

Say congrats to Christina and Patrick!

Christina emailed me at the beginning of February and gave me the best complements. I greatly appreciate those because as an artist, photographer with anyone we are self critical of our own work. I met with Christina, Patrick, and Dad last night. I was supposed to be in G-ville today doing photo shoot, but you can see the weather wasn’t right. I can’t wait for the e-pics and wedding. It will be at the Chapel in the Garden, April. Can’t wait:) Check back again soon for more pics and info!:)

Travis & Melissa

I met up with Travis & Melissa at Ponce Inlet for their engagement shoot. It was quite chilly but we made it work and had fun together. They will be getting married at the beautiful Indigo Lakes Golf Club on February 20. I look forward to capturing their special day!

Richard & Stephanie

Congrats to Richard & Stephanie on their upcoming April wedding! Yesterday I met with them to do their engagement shoot. We all had such a fun time and I am so happy for this couple. We started at the Port Orange City Center with shots by the lake and at the same location where Richard proposed, behind the amphitheater. We then met up at Ponce Inlet. Even though it was colder and more windy we were able to get some really beautiful pictures of them. I look forward to working with Richard & Stephanie again at their wedding at Sunset Harbor Yacht Club!

Corinne and TJ – Getting Married!:) And Engagement Pics

This is kinda worth a little story. I think I met Corinne in like 3rd grad or 4th, its kinda fuzzy back then. But thats ok. I remember Chris and Corrine (brother|sister) they’ve always been really nice. So, I am glad and honored to be able to be at their wedding as their photographer! We’re talking right now through email about setting up the Engagement Shoot which will be March 9th. Shooting in a new area so wish me luck:) LOL JK- it doesn’t matter where I shoot, I just make it look amazing!

In NY

A Dream Was Made Real!

Michelle, the wedding planner (www.adreammadereal.com) for MJ and Fred’s wedding did exactly what she does perfect! Erica with Keeka Productions Videotaped and Celebrations DJ made the sound alive. The wedding venue was Our Lady of Hope, and Sunset Harbor Yacht Club. It was a very very exciting day for me, first the celebration for MJ and Fred, and then my birthday. Yikes the big 3.0. However that night won’t be forgotten at all, the celebration was very touching, and celebration after was a moment to remember! The music filled the air, and dancing was amazing. Lot’s of picture to come soon! Here’s a few samples!

Bill & Carland

Congrats to Bill & Carland on their upcoming wedding, October 9th! They have chosen the Perfect Bliss package, which includes a free engagement shoot. I look forward to working with them in the future. Keep posted for updates on their engagement and wedding pics!

Thank you cards! I love them!

Nicole and Jayson, Tammy had sent in a thank you card. They are nice to see that you are definitely appreciated when they see the photos and realize the memories that are captured!

Meghan had a good question!

Hey! I tried to figure it out myself but I have NO CLUE what I did so I thought maybe you could help me because no one else I know is as good w/ a camera as you.
I was shooting outside yesterday and some how changed my image size to RAW. When I downloaded them they wouldn’t download into my Pictures the normal way but they did download to Nikon Transfer. I can’t open them and I don’t know how to change them. Do you know how I can change it on the camera or computer so that I can view them??
Hope that you and Lindsay are doing well.
Thank you!
Meg

Here’s the answer:

When I shoot weddings and photo shoots I only use RAW for shooting because it is the max quality. In order to  convert them, use photoshop to open them and then save them to JPG. If you dont have photoshop, go to www.download.com and get a program by searching “RAW TO JPG” there’s several free converters, or use NIKON ViewNX or VIEWNX it should be in your box.

:) Hope that helps!

Edits Edits Edits

If you didn’t know what I do during the day when im not working on shoots… Edits and uploads. When you edit all the photos in a shoot to make them the best they can be with post processing it does take time. Here’s a few crazy facts about process. Let’s snip one hour out of a wedding and break it down to what it takes to get those photos ready for final.

1hr shoot
1/4hr downloading from camera to computer
1/4hr Importing to editing program
1hr uploading to website
1/2hr converting to raw to jpg
1/4hr burning to disc
1hr creating lightscribe

THAT IS A TOTAL OF : 4.25hrs

That’s just for 1hr of shooting! That’s why there is always a turn around time and they are not instant. And imagine having 4-5 of those stacked up. Fortunately I am busy enough to do about 3 shoots per week, and usually about 1-2 weddings per weekend. So I am constantly working on images. I still try to get everything back in a reasonable amount of time unless holidays affect me.

Want to see my reviews? Thank you for all the clients who have left a review. Wanna know what it feels like to work on 2500 images in a day? It makes you tired;) GOODNIGHT!

Happy Birthday Mrs. Carfagno!

Party was a fun night at the Palmetto Club in Daytona Beach. Family and Friends were around and as she arrived in surprise of who was there, her facial expression said it all! I was able to capture some great photos including the fun surprised look when she walked in. I normally do around 10 birthday party’s per year. Coverage is slight different from normal photo shoots as the photojournalistic style that blends with about 20 minutes max of family portraits gets you coverage from all angles. Mostly the birthday party coverage is less than that of weddings or larger events as the hours are scaled back. Take a look here’s a quick pic of her entrance and blowing out the cake! Happy 70th!

Prop-Jet Photoshoot today – Where’d Martin go?!

What a fun bunch- The guys at prop-jet are fun to work around. Martin was stuck (stuck) in Key West due to the inclement weather. I met with a few of the guys there to get the rest of the planes that were there. They were taking the Turbo Piper Seminole. You can rent any of the planes from them, www.prop-jet.com. I REALLY enjoyed the shoot, Machinery is my thing. Wanna see more here’s a gallery link, I am debating on doing these in HD or non HD, I will have to get with Martin to see what he likes.

Mark you do a Free Engagement shoot with your weddings???

Yes! The answer is absolutely. The best thing about e-pics and doing them is it benefits both the client and photographer when you get to do these. Especially if you are having a wedding coming up that I am hired for.  With any of the wedding packages for a limited time, lets say until June 1st 2010. I will give the ‘we’re engaged’ engagement packages from www.markdickinsonphotography.com and waive the package price of $150.

Amanda and Randy E-Pics and Wedding

I met up with Amanda and Randy today at Callegrande to do their engagement photos. I think we got them just right. It was perfect between the light and the temp after these few frozen day’s we’ve had. I offer the engagement shoots at no charge when hiring me for a wedding since there is a great opportunity to work together before the wedding and get a feel for each others personality (like a second meeting). They looked like they had fun and also had a couple of shots on the railroad track. I used some flash techniques here in a way unique to photography since it is off camera.

Blogs Blogs Blogs? WHY

mark dickinson in bed blogging

Yeah, i really took a pic of me blogging in bed with the mac

Ok, Im not much of a blogger. I was gonna have a friend help me with it since I dont have a lot of time to write blogs about my photography. It’s hard to keep up with everything as it is. But I dont think that would be very personal to have someone else write about the stories that I come across with meeting clients, doing photoshoots, or just every day events that might be interesting to anyone reading it. I dont even know who is going to read this… SO here’s to you reader, potential client, those browsing ideas and looking for photographers elsewhere outside of the Daytona Beach | Central Florida area… I hope you enjoy this! My wife, Lindsay (www.ldweddings.com) | www.weddingsbylindsay.com helped me get this started, selected a theme and also showed ME how to get it rolling.

Oh, Here’s a quick and easy thank you! Anyone reading this blog email me mark@markdickinsonphotography.com with “I Read your blog” I’ll give you a free 5×7 of any photo in my gallery, whether its weddings, or any other photo that you just might like!!!!

DUDE GETS PWNED By the window

Andrew & Rachel

It was my first in Port St. Lucie and I was glad to be there. The neatest thing of all from being away from home… is that I ran into someone I knew. They were married on the beach in Port St Lucie at the Douglas Beach. Storm Clouds were rolling in but it only helped things. The clouds were so dramatically lit that the ocean turned an emerald green color that was unbeatable. I think there were a little bit of nervousness in the air but after it was all said and done I was able to capture some nice moments. I did one of the first jumping shots here. I never did those before because of clients requests. It worked out perfectly here tho everyone got some ups. The reception was held in Lucie west. Very fun place! I broke some rules on the wedding because I was requested to join in on a toast. I don’t drink but The best man and Andrew insisted. I was photographing the ‘guy’s’ toast from on top of the truck and they handed one up. I think theres a photo out there somewhere! Ut oh! Their favorite photo at the end of it all is when we got some pretty clouds during the sunset at the reception. Rachel you have an album coming :) Pick the best! All of them? Im being funny.

Brian & Stephanie

Robbie Miller, I want to say thank you again for bringing us together. It had been a long time since middle school. Your sister is a really wonderful person and I can’t say enough about her and Brian. More and more I think about the Shores Resort in Daytonab Beach shores, just east of South Daytona / Port Orange I think of elegant, beauty and professionalism. Michael Jordan was spotted that weekend since he is a big fan of bike week events. Stephanie was fortunate enough to see him. I can’t say how much fun I had at their wedding. The cutest pictures, fun atmostphere, and fun fun fun to end! I got some of my first natural ‘threshold’ shots from this wedding as brian carried stephanie across to their honeymoon suite. Mister DJ Gave a nice warm but fun night of music. Since, I have their photo hung in my office where they were kissing against the wall! None the less! It was a perfect night.

Ryan & Allie Engagement

What a beautiful couple! They are fun, and full of energy. The photos done at sugarmill gardens were fantastic. I met them in a unique way. I was offering to give out 1 free engagement for a couple that just didn’t have the funds to do the shoot. Not necessiarily trying to reel them in for a wedding but I posted an ad on craigslist for a few stories about ‘would you like a free engagement session?  They wrote back, and suprisingly the ONLY ones who did. So they actually got a full engagement shoot for no charge. I don’t do time for print but, what had happened is a client gave me a very generous tip and I decided to transfer that in a way to someone who may need it. I enjoyed ryan and allies reason for the need, and as they are very hard workers and were trying to help families out themselves it worked out. After the shoot they were featured on my site for a long time. Again, the shoot was in Port Orange, Just north of New Smyrna beach where a second sugar mill ruins are. The shoot was a fun filled hour long and the two favorites from both were the old shed, and the cute one of them lying on top of each other smiling at each other. Read later about the wedding in Ponce inlet! That was a blast too.

Josh & Brandy

I remember the first time I got to meet Josh and Brandy. They are meant for each other! Josh is a musician who plays out of Jacksonville, Fl frequently. He is definately very good. He played a wonderful song for her during the wedding. I think the cutest photo came out as she was sitting by the piano listening. They were married in St. Augustine. What a beautiful place. I have their photo hung on the wall from the carraige ride. Traveling for weddings is fun, I was suprised to run into Rachael there at the wedding. But as always it was good to see her! On this particular wedding, I traveled to St Augustine, from port orange, which is just shy south of daytona beach.

Amy & Toby Engagement

I love Ponce Inlet shoots when the time is just right. Theres a lot involved to get those magazine shots. The perfect Sand color, Lighting,  and sunset just right. It actually takes the perfect time of year too. Winter if you can believe it. I know the winters here ar emild compaired to northern states. I like ponce inlet for the fact, we can do westerly sunset shoots here and its usually quite secluded vs. most other places on the beach. Amy and Toby’s was exactcally that. Perfect settings. The only bad thing was rain, and wind. Who said bad? It actually created a rainbow, a very unique setting for a hair blown shot. I was fortunate to be able to do a wedding/engagement combo with them. They were married in a very nice chapel in Daytona Beach. The reception was at the plaza resort and spa on Beach Side Daytona. Amy and Toby’s was a semi destination wedding, however not coming from Georgia, Alabama, Ohio or somewhere else, They were from Gainsville, Fl which is approximately 2.5hrs away from daytona. I enjoyed the company of Dj Vern, with pyramid DJ company. Naturally the best for any budget. I used some of her pictures on the new, www.markdickinsonphotography.com site.
